400 + people generated thousands of ideas, and now we are putting them into action

You spoke. We heard you. And starting this week, The City of Red Deer is all in as we begin exploring and actioning some of the most talked about ideas for reducing crime and improving community safety in our city; ideas like subsidized security systems, improved lighting in public spaces and new or updated bylaws that enable better enforcement.

Between November and January, more than 400 people contributed thousands of ideas, in person and online, for reducing crime and improving community safety in Red Deer. What was the point? We wanted to zero in on actions we, as a community, can take right now to reduce crime and improve community safety – actions that will drive results in the short and medium term.

What did we hear?

Across all six public participation sessions, the five areas we heard most about were property crime, personal and community safety, justice and enforcement, addictions and substance abuse, and business and economic impact. People talked about what The City can do, what citizens can do, what police, businesses, and other orders of government can do, all in the interest of community safety.

Was it easy? Certainly not. People are frustrated with crime and community safety. But they also told us they are ready to be part of the solution. In fact, 80 per cent of participants indicated they are ready to take action to improve their community’s safety with 96 per cent somewhat to strongly agreeing that they believe citizens have a role to play in making our city safe.

That right there sounds like commitment to us. So here we go.

What next?

Despite differing perspectives from many participants, there were some common ideas and threads throughout the many conversations including the potential for capital investments such as lighting, security systems and infrastructure; the need for increased opportunities for social connection and engagement; increased communication and information sharing; increased reporting across all areas; and, increased enforcement.

With this in mind, The City of Red Deer will work to champion some of the most talked about ideas. We will explore them, we will work with the community to implement them, we will evaluate whether they are working, or not, and when things aren’t working, we will quickly and deliberately make adjustments. This is our commitment to you.

What do we want in return?

There are many items on this list, and The City cannot do it alone.

Step 1: Pick three things you can do over the next month to support in these efforts. It might be walking next door to meet your neighbour. It might be registering your security camera with CAPTURE (https://www.reddeercapture.ca/). It might be going downtown to shop at a local business. These small things will add up to make a big difference.

Step 2: Tell us what you’re doing. Email us at bettertogether@reddeer.ca to tell us about what is working, and what isn’t. Keep the conversation going, and share your ideas.

Where can you find out more?
